Overmolding is an important production and manufacturing process that you may need for different parts and components for the things that you make. In the process of overmolding, we use two or more materials in order on the same part. In most cases, the first material functions as a substrate. This substrate is the base layer. A second material may cover the substrate in part or in full. In some cases, a third or subsequent material is also used in order to complete the production of the part.

A substrate could consist of many different things. It could be machined metal, plastic or rubber. It could also be an existing product, such as a nail, screw or insert. The substrate is the first piece of what will end up as a chemically bonded or mechanically attached unit.

The second material, which is what we cover over the substrate, can be in different forms. We may use pellets of plastic, liquid rubber or blends of plastic and rubber. In most cases, we overmold with plastic. The plastic may have a foaming agent, colorant or other additives. We melt the plastic and apply it to the substrate. In some cases, there can be bonding issues between two types of plastic. We work this out with you in advance.

There are many reasons why you may want to overmold something. Many common consumer goods are made with this process. For example, the hand grips on tools are typically made of a plastic or rubber poured over metal.
